Take action

Things to try this week

In this chapter you have learned how to create inspired meetings by managing emotions, attention and communication style.

Now it is time to put what you have learned into action.

Try it this week:

As you attend and lead meetings this week, notice the dynamics in the room.

1.

Take the opportunity to use the strategies you've identified today to create inspiring meetings.

  • To manage emotions.
  • To manage attention.

2.

Reflect on the colleagues in your team and how their brains impact meetings.

Ask yourself:

  • Whose toxic behaviours dominate a meeting?
  • Who hijacks meetings according to their emotional needs?
  • Who are the go-to people for increasing positivity?

To take your learning further:

1.

Write down your key learnings from this chapter and the strategies you plan to try, and take them to your learning group meeting to discuss. You will find a guide for this session along with the key takeaways from this chapter in the Resources area, in the header bar.

You have completed this chapter!

You have now become accomplished at applying communications skills to manage emotions and attention.

This also marks the end of this module! Take a moment to celebrate:

  • How you have paid attention to what is really going on in your meetings.
  • How you have deepened your understanding of the limbic system and its sneaky ways.
  • How you have prepared for and reined in emotions.
  • How you have learned to manage others' attention.
  • How you have become conscious and intentional about the communication styles you use.
  • How you have re-inspired your meetings.

In the next module we will focus on how to leverage these skills in more difficult situations like giving feedback.

Now you can leverage these skills in coaching or development conversations, as well as in more difficult situations like giving feedback.
